Ryan Mallett has been cut by the Houston Texans. According to ESPN sources, the team has their sights set on T.J. Yates as a possible replacement.
Reports surfaced yesterday suggesting there was a rift between Rick Smith and Bill O’Brien regarding whether or not to release the backup from Arkansas. While this does seem to end any notion of a quarterback controversy in Houston this season, it does not solve the team’s persistent quarterback hole in the slightest.
Despite a 2-5 record, the Texans are still only a game out of first place, but many fans are questioning whether a push for the playoffs is really in the best interest of the team. On one side, a strong late season run could lead to a jump in production similar to what the Carolina Panthers have experienced this season(3-8-1 last season before turning things around and making the playoffs; 7-0 this season). The counter argument to that is Carolina has a superstar, franchise quarterback in Cam Newton, while Houston has Brian Hoyer, a career backup.
In this writer’s opinion, Hoyer isn’t the answer, and if there was ever a year to have a high draft pick in order to select the quarterback that can take this team places, this is it.
